The WellCare Investigation Saga Is Coming to a Close
One of the major enforcement sagas inย managed careย came to a head on May 19th,ย when Todd S. Farha, former chief executiveย officer (CEO) for WellCare was sentenced toย serve 36 months in prison for defrauding theย Florida Medicaid program. WellCare operatesย health maintenance organizations (HMOs)ย in several states providing services throughย government-sponsored health care benefitย programs like Medicaid. They provide managedย health care services ย for approximatelyย 2.6 million Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries,ย nationwide, and have beenย plagued withย a series of investigationsย dating back to aย Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) raid inย 2007 that led to the indictment of five formerย executives. All five of them have now beenย convicted.
