Richard P. Kusserow | May 2011

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule to update Medicare payment policies and rates for acute care and long term care hospitals under the Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) for fiscal year (FY) 2013.  The proposed rule contains several revisions concerning quality including changes to the Inpatient Quality Reporting (IQR) Program and Hospital Acquired Conditions (HACs).  In addition, CMS proposed changes to the Graduate Medical Education (GME) and the Indirect Medical Education (IME) policies as required under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA).  CMS will accept comments on the proposed rule until June 25.  The final IPPS provisions will go into effect on October 1.
